The Mayor Gallery in London presents an inspiring exhibition highlighting the collaborative life and work of Japanese artist couple Tadaaki Kuwayama and Rakuko Naito. Both artists are committed to minimalist art, and in this show, they present works that are characterized by materiality and reduction to the essential.
The exhibition highlights Kuwayama and Naito’s significant contributions to the Minimalist movement of the 1960s and introduces their unique approaches to this art form. Kuwayama is known for his “radical neutrality,” in which he removes all features of an image to position it beyond aesthetic conventions. Naito, on the other hand, uses traditional Japanese materials such as Kozo and Mino Washi paper to create organic shapes and textures in her paper assemblages.
The Kuwayama/Naito exhibition allows visitors to explore the remarkable artistic symbiosis of these two artists, who developed their talents in New York City and played an important role in the postwar global art scene. The intimacy of their life and work together, as well as the subtle connection between their works, will be explored.
Kuwayama and Naito’s works are represented in major museums and collections worldwide, including the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa, Japan, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
