“Barbara Hepworth: Art & Life” is a retrospective exhibition presented at Towner Eastbourne that covers Hepworth’s entire artistic output. The exhibition, which has already received rave reviews in Wakefield, Edinburgh, and St Ives, features a variety of her best-known sculptures as well as rarely shown drawings and paintings.
In addition to the famous abstract sculptures from her early period and the strung sculptures from the 1940s and 1950s, there are also large-scale bronze carvings from her late period. The exhibition also highlights her cultural interests in music, dance, theater, politics, and literature, and shows the range of her work, including her engagement with science and technology.
The show demonstrates how Hepworth’s work combined the local with the universal and challenged the boundaries of modern sculpture.
