Edmund de Waal at Gagosian: “this must be the place”

New York, 13 September – 28 October 2023

Gagosian Gallery in New York will present the exhibition “This must be the place” by British artist and writer Edmund de Waal beginning September 13, 2023. This is the artist’s first exhibition at Gagosian in New York in ten years.

“this must be the place” features black and white disc-turned porcelain vessels presented in wall display cases. De Waal juxtaposes the cylindrical vessels and bowls with fine porcelain tiles, steel, silver, and stone blocks, some of which are inscribed with handwritten texts. In their arrangement and spacing, these arrangements recall books on a shelf, stanzas of poetry, or the notes and rests of a musical notation.

The artist himself describes his new work as a journey of different places, reflections of the origins and histories of the materials used. He pays particular attention to the inclusion of fragments and echoes of people and places that are important to him.

In addition to the main exhibition, Gagosian Gallery presents “to light, and then return-” an exhibition of sculptures by de Waal and prints by Sally Mann. This complementary exhibition runs from September 14 to October 28, 2023, at 976 Madison Avenue in New York.
