Gallery 57 is pleased to present ‘ABSTRACT AESTHETIC’, a mixed exhibition featuring a diverse group of contemporary artists with Eastern and Western influences. This exhibition brings together works in a variety of media, offering viewers an opportunity to engage with individual interpretations of abstraction.
Included are Japanese artists Maya Makino, known for her monochrome indigo paintings, which are deeply rooted in personal memories and sensations, and Yoghe Matsuda, who presents mixed media paintings. The exhibition also welcomes two new Korean artists to the gallery: Soon Yul Kang, whose practice encompasses calligraphy, collage, and hand-woven paper tapestry, and Miae Kim, who showcases ceramics.
British Chinese artist Alexandra Yan Wong returns to Gallery 57, contributing mixed media paintings and Jack Havelock Bailey incorporates the Japanese technique of ‘Yakisugi’, the traditional method of wood preservation using fire, into some of his finely turned vessels. The exhibition also features works by British artist Matthew Keers, who is exhibiting at Gallery 57 for the first time. Keers’ paintings are rooted in a deep engagement with color, dividing the canvas into vertical and horizontal sections that bring attention to the meeting points and transitions between different hues.
“ABSTRACT AESTHETIC” thus presents a broad spectrum of positions in abstraction and highlights the interplay of cultural influences, individual approaches, and diverse materials in contemporary art practice.
