Galeria Victor Lope in Barcelona presents the solo show “Stars Wrapped in Skin ” by British artist Jo Hummel from February 27 to March 29, 2025. The exhibition is dedicated to Hummel’s profound exploration of the connection between matter, consciousness and the universal nature of being.
Inspired by the words of 13th-century poet Rumi—“We are stars wrapped in skin. The light you are seeking has always been within”—this exhibition explores the idea of consciousness as a vital force present in all organic matter, connecting humanity and the natural world. Rooted in reductionist principles and informed by concepts such as Sunya (void and infinity), the work employs symbols, geometry, and natural cycles to reflect on the unity of existence.
Using paper treated with clay pigments gathered from natural environments, the artist creates layered, sculptural compositions through techniques like weaving and joinery, transforming her materials into meditations on growth, decay, and renewal. These works invite viewers to consider consciousness as a universal essence—a luminous thread that flows through all life and the very dust of the earth.
We are stars wrapped in skin. The light you are seeking has always been within.
