Contemporary Art Shows in August 2023 For Minimalist Art Lovers

August offers a number of exciting exhibitions that spotlight both established and emerging artists. In Los Angeles, Francis Gallery invites you to “Light Spilling in through a Window,” an exhibition featuring the work of Liam Stevens and Sarah Kaye Rodden. Also in LA, Gemini G.E.L. celebrates the centennial of Ellsworth Kelly’s birth with a wealth of his prints and sculptures, the result of decades of collaboration. Hauser & Wirth in Zurich sheds light on the work of three pioneers of Abstract Expressionism – Louise Bourgeois, Barnett Newman, and Mark Rothko. In New York, you have until August 11th to check out the works of Tomie Ohtake, whose influence on the Brazilian art scene is still evident today.

Ellsworth Kelly: An Exploration of Color
Los Angeles, Gemini G.E.L., 15 July  –  15 September, 2023

The exhibition “Ellsworth Kelly at Gemini: An Exploration of Color” celebrates the centennial of painter, sculptor, and printmaker Ellsworth Kelly’s birth and features more than 300 of his prints and sculptures created during his 44-year collaboration with Gemini. The exhibition focuses on Kelly’s experiments with variations of single colors, particularly red, yellow, blue, and green. One inspiration for this was Kelly’s very precise approach to choosing his colors. The works on display are primarily from the Gemini archive. For the anniversary, six Los Angeles museums will be given carefully selected prints by Kelly to add to their existing Kelly collections.

Louise Bourgeois, Barnett Newman And Mark Rothko. The God that Failed
Zurich, Hauser & Wirth, 09 June – 16 September 2023

Hauser & Wirth Gallery in Zurich presents the exhibition “The God that Failed”, curated by Philip Larratt-Smith, until September. The focus is on the works of three influential artists of the New York School: Louise Bourgeois, Barnett Newman, and Mark Rothko. The exhibition places sculptures by Bourgeois from 1946 to 1954 alongside paintings and drawings by Newman and Rothko from the same era. In their works, the transition from biomorphic figuration to abstraction and geometry is evident.

The exhibition title refers to the crisis of the concept of authority after World War II. Important works on view include Newman’s “Untitled 1, 1955” and Rothko’s “No. 40 (Blue Penumbra)” from 1957.

Closing Soon: Tomie Ohtake
New York, 23 June – 11 August 2023

The current exhibition at 55 Walker Gallery celebrates the extensive career of artist Tomie Ohtake including works made between 1969 and 2014.
She gained notoriety for her blindfolded “Blind Paintings,” which challenged the Brazilian Neoconcrete movement and emphasized intuition and physical participation. Ohtake also drew attention in the field of sculpture, translating her paintings into three-dimensional bodies. Ohtake’s last works, before her death in 2015, were monochromatic white canvases with relief applications.
